Liverpool attacker Ben Woodburn is set to be sidelined until 2019 with an injured ankle, according to the Echo.

The regional newspaper claim the 19-year-old Wales international broke down during a training session with loan club Sheffield United and has returned to Melwood for treatment amid fears he won’t be available until at least the start of next year.

The Echo report Woodburn attended Sunday’s 3-1 win over Manchester United at Anfield and was spotted at the stadium on crutches with his left foot in a protective boot.

OPINION

What a shattering blow for Woodburn in what has been an immensely difficult season for him so far. The teenager’s loan move to Championship outfit United has turned sour and he has had just 10 minutes of first-team action since September. He will have to dig deep in the coming weeks, especially if the damage to his ankle is worse than originally feared. As the Echo report, the full scale of the damage has not yet been ascertained. Certainly, Woodburn is unlikely to feature for United again as he looks to draw the line under a season-long loan that is almost certain to be terminated in the January window. The Chester-born wide forward must now concentrate on rest, rehabilitation and getting restored to full fitness in time to find a new club in the mid-season window. Woodburn needs to be playing regularly at this stage of his career, and will benefit massively from joining a loan club where he could expect to be a first choice.
