Former England international Stephen Warnock has claimed that Wolverhampton Wanderers need a 20-30 goal-a-season striker.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side fell to a 2-0 defeat against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Friday night, and Warnock reflected on Wolves after the game.

“I do believe that they will have to dip into the market, whether it be in January but definitely in the summer,” he told the Football Daily podcast [5:00]. “They need to go out and buy a, sort of, 20 or 30 goal man.

“But they also need guys out on the wings who can assist. [Ivan] Cavaleiro, I thought he was brilliant when he came onto the pitch, a real threat, wanted to make things happen in the second half,” he finished.

Warnock is bang on the money, here. Cavaleiro was desperately unlucky not to start against the Reds and showed what he was about once he came on the pitch. However, it’s been clear this season that Nuno’s side need more production from their widemen. Diogo Jota, to his credit, has been impressive in recent weeks but he’s now out injured. So other players need to step up or Nuno will be forced to bring attacking reinforcements in next month. You do get the feeling watching Wolves, though, that a top class frontman would make all the difference to their prospects. They create so many chances that a natural born poacher would fill his boots at Molineux. Raul Jimenez is having a fine season on loan from Benfica, but he’s never been prolific and likely won’t be over the course of the campaign. Getting in a 20 goal striker would take Wolves from a decent top half side into a high level Premier League proposition.
