The manager who brought Matt Doherty to Bohemians prior to his arrival at Wolverhampton Wanderers believes the Irishman is now worth £20million.

The Irish Independent claims that Doherty cost Wolves around £72,000 when he first arrived at Molineux, but Pat Fenlon believes he would now cost interested parties far more.

“Matt is so highly-rated I can’t see him leaving for less than £15million if they ever sold him, and with the money in the Premier League now, he could go for £20million,” he told the Irish Independent.

The 26-year-old has been in impressive form for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side this season, scoring three times including the winner over Newcastle United last time out.

OPINION

It’s hard to disagree with Fenlon, here. Doherty has been hugely impressive for Wolves this campaign and is a huge part of their team. He provides so much on the right hand side of the pitch, both offensively and defensively, that he is pretty much irreplaceable for Nuno. Looking at the current state of the transfer market it’s hard to argue that Doherty wouldn’t cost at least £20million. It’s hard to find defenders who contribute as much going forward as the Wolves wing back, and for an ambitious team like Wolves to agree to sell one of their prized assets they would have to be offered a huge sum of money. It’s hard to see Nuno agreeing to offload Doherty at any point, because there aren’t many players who suit the manager’s system like the Republic of Ireland international, so it’s likely we’ll never find out how much he’s worth. However, he has been so impressive this season that a big club may well come in for him, who knows.
