Wolves full-back Matt Doherty has claimed that the owners of the Midlands club are aiming for a Premier League title within six years.

Wanderers are owned by Chinese conglomerate Fosun International, and caught the eye over the summer with a number of high profile signings that acted as a serious statement of intent from the newly promoted side.

And Republic of Ireland international Doherty, a breakout star of Wolves’ campaign, says that the club’s ambitions go far beyond staying in the league.

Speaking to The Offside Rule podcast, he said: “The vision for [Wolves’ owners] is probably to get in to Europe first, finish in the top six or seven. And then I think they want to win the league in the next five or six years,”

“I imagine [a Premier League title] is the goal. It’s obviously really exciting to be able to be a part of it now, at the start of it.

“Hopefully, I can stay here for when that happens.”

OPINION

When Wolves stormed the Championship last season, the common consensus was that this was a second tier side unlike any the English game had seen before. Flash and ruthless, they dismantled nearly everything put in front of them, and have looked to continue that momentum with a series of high profile summer acquisitions. Portuguese internationals Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho felt as if they would be more suited to moves to a club in the top six. Certainly, the influence of super agent Jorge Mendes has been huge, and Wolves should have more than enough to finish comfortably mid-table. To make that next step and become European, and indeed title, contenders, you would assume that a vast financial investment will have to be poured into the team. It would be a monumental gamble, and one that, should it go wrong, could potentially ruin the club. That being said, Wolves feel as if they’re in the Premier League to stay, and while six years might be a tad ambitious, given a decent run in the top flight who knows what might happen. Look at Leicester City…
