West Ham full-back Pablo Zabaleta claims that he has no plans of retiring at the end of the season.

The Argentine signed for the Hammers in summer 2017 on a two-year deal from Manchester City, but has no intention of hanging up his boots when his contract expires.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I know I’m not getting any younger but I still feel alright, I’m playing in every single game and physically I feel good.

“We will see at the end of the season what the best decision is for me, the club, for everyone, but at the moment I don’t want to think about this, I just want to enjoy playing games. The main thing is to have a good season with the team.

He added: “I’ll be 34 in January and I love football so much. If I continue playing in every game it means I can go for a few more years.

“When you are in your 30s you cannot think about long term, that is the only thing, but I’m not thinking about retirement.”

OPINION

Pablo Zabaleta has been one of the finest full-backs in English football for the past decade. At 34, he may be in the latter stages of his career, but he still has a lot to give and it would be a surprise if West Ham decided against offering him a new deal. For much of this season, the Argentine has been an integral part of Hammers team that has begun to make real progress under Manuel Pellegrini. Concerns that his age would lead to a lack of physicality or an increased ineffectiveness have largely been put to one side as he has proven his fitness and his defensive qualities time and time again. If Zabaleta is offered a new contract, it is like that the Irons will still look to bring in a full-back with one eye on the future, but there would be few better mentors for a new addition than the experienced ex-City man, and even as his career comes to an end he will be a valuable squad player.
