West Ham midfielder Jack Wilshere could miss the remainder of the season after his latest injury setback, according to The Sun.

The newspaper report that club insiders are fearful the 26-year-old may require more surgery on his ankle after limping out just five minutes into his return against Newcastle earlier this month.

The Sun claim that the club are hopeful this latest issue will clear up with a few weeks of rest, but the £100,000-a-week midfielder [Sun] could be set for a very lengthy lay-off should that not happen in a major blow for the club.

OPINION

This is not what West Ham wanted to hear after Wilshere suffered his latest setback. The worrying thing about this situation is that this latest injury actually relates to his ‘good’ ankle, and not the one on which he had surgery earlier this season. Obviously an injury to either ankle is not ideal, but the fact that Wilshere is now experiencing issues with his other ankle really does illustrate just how injury prone he is. When a player suffers a serious injury then there is always the risk of aggravating that problem further down the line, no matter how robust his body is. But when a player is suffering so many different injuries to different body parts, then that is a serious worry, and it will make the club question Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to sign Wilshere on a three-year deal in the summer. Eyebrows were raised when the club decided to hand the midfielder such a long deal, and should these issues not clear up soon, then questions will begin to be asked about that decision.
