Arsene Wenger has spoken out in praise of Unai Emery’s transfer dealings as Arsenal manager, and has suggested that the club is in good hands under the Spaniard.

The Frenchman, who left the Gunners after 22 years in charge at the end of last season, has admitted that he has been impressed by the start made by his successor.

Up until a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Southampton last weekend, the Londoners had recorded an unbeaten run of 22 matches in all competitions.

Speaking on beIN Sports, as quoted in the Sun, Wenger said: “I think Emery is doing an excellent job.

“With the recruits he has brought in, it has brought a form of defensive stability and so I think everything is going well.

“The team is in good hands and I always said that. A lot of people thought when I left the club that the team would need to completely rebuild – I never thought that.

“I am very happy that these people have been proven wrong.”

OPINION

It’s hard not to be impressed by the start Unai Emery has made at Arsenal. In spite of everything that the Frenchman achieved in north London, there was an inescapable feeling of stagnation that pervaded the club before his departure, and it was difficult to tell how long it would take to shift that. Emery has made good signings, it has to be said, with Lucas Torreira and Mateo Guendouzi being particularly impressive, but equally as important has been the way that he has reinvigorated the side and seemingly injected a little bit of grit and nastiness into the fluidity of Wenger’s philosophy. The Gunners still have a long way to go, especially at the back, but even the most optimistic of Arsenal fans won’t have expected such a promising start to Emery’s tenure, and given the same kind of patience and trust afforded to Wenger, who knows how far he can take the club.
