South American football expert Tim Vickery has been speaking highly of Newcastle United target Miguel Almiron.

The respected journalist, speaking on talkSPORT, as quoted by the Chronicle, was full of praise for the Paraguayan international, and suggested that a completed deal seemed imminent.

Vickery said: “Miguel Almiron has just been a star turn for Atlanta and is now surely on his way to Newcastle.

“Atlanta have already brought in a replacement with Almiron coming over to Newcastle and there’s a real player there.

“If I look into the future of Newcastle United, what I love about Almiron is the pace and the left foot and over the last few years he’s added more goals to his game.

“His decision making in the last third perhaps could be improved a little bit. But he’s scoring more goals, great pace and the left foot is a terrific combination.

“He’s the right age as well. He’s coming up 25 so he’s not going to leave it any longer (for his big move).

“It was quite a surprise move from being the best player in Argentine football to MLS but so far it seems to have worked out and I hope it comes off for the sake of the Premier League and Almiron who I think is a smashing young player.”

OPINION

With every passing day Miguel Almiron’s move to Newcastle seems more and more like an inevitability. There are few, if any, members of the British press who can match Tim Vickery’s encyclopaedic knowledge of all things South American, and the praise he lavishes on the 24-year-old must be substantiated by genuine personal belief. Signing a player from the MLS for the sizeable fee being reported in this instance is all but unprecedented, but Almiron is an unprecedented talent in that league. MVP this season, he is not a washed up legend looking for a final pay check or a precocious academy graduate, he is a player at the peak of his powers who made the conscious decision to try hi stuck stateside. The Magpies, should they land their man, will be bringing in a player of remarkable technical ability, and in possession of a creative flair that they have lacked for much of this campaign.
