Tottenham are keen on signing on-loan Everton midfielder Andre Gomes after recruitment chief Steve Hitchen’s recent Merseyside transfer mission, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The newspaper claim the Spurs head scout attended the Toffees’ recent 1-0 defeat at Liverpool in order to watch Gomes, who is on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

The Telegraph report Everton want to land Gomes in the January window, while Tottenham would prefer a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Good move for Tottenham?

Definitely. Gomes has bags of star quality. He has made a huge impression in his eight matches for Everton since shaking off the injury he suffered in pre-season before his deadline-day move from Barcelona to Goodison Park. His touch, composure and vision instantly won over the Everton faithful and he can handle himself in the Premier League, too. With Mousa Dembele in the final year of his Spurs contract, Gomes would be the perfect solution to Mauricio Pochettinio’s need for a replacement of pedigree and potential world class.

Likely to happen?

Everton have made no secret of their desire to lock Gomes down to a permanent deal and talks are set to take place over the coming months with the Barcelona hierarchy. That doesn’t mean Spurs, who are a stronger and more established side that Everton, also playing regularly in the Champions League, don’t have an excellent chance. The Times report Gomes is available for the £29million fee Barcelona paid Valencia two years ago.
