OPINION

Tottenham Hotspur produced a dominant performance as they brushed Bournemouth aside 5-0 at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side looked in fine fettle from the opening whistle and they blew the Cherries away in what was a statement-making victory.

Goals from Christian Eriksen, a brace from Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane saw Spurs come away with all three points in a boxing day clash that saw Eddie Howe’s team rendered the punching bag.

As usual there is plenty that can be gleaned from the game, andĀ This is FutbolĀ has identified three things that can be learned from Tottenham’s crushing victory over Bournemouth.

Son simply undroppable for Spurs

This was another match which saw the South Korea international’s smile light up the stadium as he got on the scoresheet for the tenth time in his last ten fixtures.

That is tremendous form from a player who isn’t an out and out centre forward. The former Bayer Leverkusen man has now firmly established himself as Tottenham’s secondary goalscorer behind the effervescent Kane.

You can tell that Son is loving his football at the moment and that translates to his performances. He was out of this world once again on Wednesday and the Cherries couldn’t live with him. He works so hard for his team and he does the business in front of goal as well.

Tottenham’s title charge continues to gather pace

All of a sudden it is Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table and Spurs behind them in second, with champions Manchester City languishing in third place.

Pochettino’s team moved one point clear of City after Wednesday’s fixtures as Pep Guardiola’s side were beaten for the second game in row.

A lot of the talk this season has been about the title race being a straight fight between City and Liverpool, but Tottenham must be considered contenders at this stage. They are still six points behind the Reds, but they are the closest challengers to the league leaders and have to be taken seriously.

Walker-Peters stakes claim

What a first half right back Kyle Walker-Peters had. The 21-year-old struggled somewhat against Barcelona in the Champions League earlier this month, but he bounced back today with a wonderful performance.

The youngster was involved throughout the game but particularly in the first half where he set up all three of Tottenham’s goals. He was instrumental on the right hand side and Spurs wouldn’t have won the game as easily as they did without him.

In a season where both Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier are struggling to find form this could be a huge chance for Walker-Peters to cement himself as the club’s first choice right back. Displays like Wednesday’s certainly won’t harm his chances, that’s for sure.
