Robbie Savage has dismissed Tottenham’s chances of winning the Premier League this season despite changing his mind that Manchester City will walk away with it.

The high-profile pundit admitted a fortnight ago that he couldn’t imagine City being stopped but Liverpool’s outstanding run has made him reconsider.

“Two weeks ago I said give the title to City,” Savage told Radio Five Live on Sunday evening, as quoted by the BBC Sport site (6.12pm). “I think they’re that good. I still think City will win it but Liverpool are still unbeaten after 17 games. Incredible!

“A plus-30 goal difference, the best defensive record in the Premier League – can Tottenham make a challenge? I’m not sure they can. Chelsea? No.”

OPINION

Savage’s five-word response on Spurs’ title challenge is pretty emphatic. The former Wales midfielder is convinced it is a two-horse race between the champions City and narrow leaders Liverpool. Certainly, the duo have been on a different level to the other Premier League big guns this season, even though the points tallies accumulated by third-placed Spurs and fourth-placed Chelsea are also hugely impressive. In most other seasons of the Premier League era, the London duo would be first and second. But, the standard has reached an astonishingly high level as City have set a new benchmark in the last two campaigns under Pep Guardiola. Liverpool look ready to push them all the way. They were outstanding against Manchester United on Sunday as they followed up an impressive midweek Champions League win against Napoli with an even more brilliant display. Tottenham are wonderfully consistent, win all the games they are expected to and totally maximise their resources. But there is a real gap in quality between them and the two leaders.
