Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that it would be an upset if Tottenham were to win the Premier League this season.

The Argentine manager has hinted that the way in which title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool go about their business means that his side are very much the underdogs in the battle for the league crown.

Speaking in a press conference, as quoted in the Mirror, Pochettino claimed that Spurs’ mentality and attitude has been key to their success of far this campaign.

He said:”It’s difficult to find another club doing the same or delivering the same work as us – the philosophy. Every single club is special and is different.

“City and Liverpool are showing they have the best teams in England. The circumstances are that one is top and the other third. But nothing changed. Until the end, everyone is going to think Liverpool and City are above the rest.

“We are there because we have the belief, we are working hard, we have the quality. But still we are a question mark. We’ll see if we can be consistent as in the first half of the season. If we are, we can talk and fight for big things.”

OPINION

It’s probably fair to suggest that Tottenham are very much the underdogs in this season’s title race. Having spent no money during the summer, and having been some distance off the summit at the end of last season, it would have been justifiable to assume that they would challenge for a top four spot and very little else this time around. Full credit must be given to Mauricio Pochettino for the job he has done at the club, and it’s right of him to imply the differences, especially financial, between his side and their title rivals. Spurs are famously conservative with their spending, and do place a lot of faith in youth, but Pochettino has been very clever in cultivating an image that suggests his club is ran on a shoestring. Compared to the likes of Manchester City, this may be true, but a large part of Spurs’ unwillingness to spend has come from the building of their new stadium, and once that is done and dusted, you would assume that they will start to flex a little more financial muscle.
