Tottenham Hotspur attacker Erik Lamela is suffering with a fresh calf injury after being left out of the match day squad v Wolves on Saturday, according to a reliable journalist.

Alasdair Gold, Spurs correspondent for football.london, reported on his personal Twitter account that the Argentina international has been struggling with a calf complaint in recent days.

Gold adds that Lamela had previously been struck down with a thigh injury earlier in December, with his calf injury the latest setback for the injury-prone forward, who is a favourite of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

This latest setback will be a worry for Tottenham and their fans, with Lamela not having had the best of luck with injuries in recent seasons. The Argentina international spent over a year on the sidelines with a mysterious hip injury before his return earlier this year, and despite his impressive form it looks like the 26-year-old is still yet to put his issues fully behind him. The fact that he has suffered both a thigh and calf injury within weeks of each other is a real concern, and all the club can hope for is that this latest complaint is not a serious one. Lamela has become such a key player for Mauricio Pochettino this season, with the left-footed forward changing the course of several games with his high-energy style. And, with the prospect of losing Son Heung-min to the Asian Cup for five games in January looming, Lamela’s fitness is even more important for the club.
