Toby Alderweireld is almost certain to leave Tottenham at the end of the season after contract talks with Daniel Levy collapsed, according to Les Sports Plus.

The section of Belgian outlet DH claim the two parties have failed to reach an agreement following “several months of negotiations” and the Spurs chairman is now in a situation “he wanted to avoid”.

Le Sports Plus report Alderweireld will be free to find a new club on 30 June “barring an improbable u-turn”.

OPINION

Hopes that Alderweireld’s impressive season as a mainstay of the Tottenham team and one of their outstanding players could end the impasse in talks over a new deal have now been dashed. Judging by this report from Belgium, there is no chance of Alderweireld remaining at Spurs beyond next summer. The north Londoners can take up an option to extend the defender’s contract by a further 12 months until the summer of 2020, but that would merely trigger a release clause enabling suitors to buy Alderweireld for a knockdown £25million in the next summer window. Given his form of this season, the Belgian will have clubs beating a path to his agent’s door trying to snap him up for a bargain price. Tottenham will make a profit on the centre-back, for sure, but they will lose one of the best players in his position, not just in the Premier League but across the whole of Europe. It’s fair to say supporters will be shattered by this update.
