OPINION
Southampton centre-back Jannik Vestergaard was lambasted for his performance against Cardiff City last weekend, and rightly so. The Danish international made a horrendous error for the Bluebirds’ only goal as the Saints limped to a 1-0 defeat. This weekend was altogether more satisfying for Ralph Hasenhuttl, with his side recording a barnstorming 3-2 win over Arsenal, but fans were still undecided about Vestergaard. Whereas some were still wary of his outing, suggesting that the Saints must invest in better, others were convinced that he has turned himself around under the new manager, and could be the answer to Southhampton’s defensive issues. The 26-year-old colossus is evidently a good player, but his lack of pace can often leave him vulnerable. If he is played with a dependable partner who can cover for his flaws then he can make for a formidable and imposing defensive presence. As with everything in the Saints new era, patience and consistency will be key.

Can't understand why Saints persist on playing Vestergaard? Must want to lose! He's the most useless defender ever played! IMO. # SOUARS

Basic defending is also NOT JUST STICKING A LEG AT IT OR STANDING AWKWARDLY CAUSING A DEFLECTION, VESTERGAARD. When will you learn?! #SaintsFC

Bloody hell, if this is a confident Vestergaard I'd hate to think what he'd be like if his confidence was shot ?

Amazing turn around in 1 week! I’ve never known so many fans stay to the very end mid season before! Superb atmosphere- all the players have improved especially Long, Vestergaard! Also Bednarek & PEH were sublime! #saintsfc

Shout out to Vestergaard who was decent. Last week could've destroyed him but he's picked himself up #saintsfc

Just need to sort out the individual errors and the CB combo, the late great Dean Richards is better than Vestergaard, Maya, Hoedt and Stephens combined! Thought Jan was outstanding #saintsfc
