COMMENTARY
It is no wonder that Manchester City fans have been left tearing Riyad Mahrez to pieces, for he could well have put their game to Southampton to bed had it not been for his selfish nature. The Algerian needs to learn when to pass the ball rather than shoot or dither in possession. He is always looking to make magic happen and while that is great when it comes off, he needs to put getting the basics right first. The responses from the supporters on Twitter are probably a little harsh – his partnership with Bernardo Silva and Danilo down the right flank caused Southampton plenty of problems, not least for the visitors’ opening goal, but there definitely has to be more of a focus on teamwork from Mahrez if he is going to live up to expectation in 2019. Still, those moments of magic have the ability to make all the difference and so long as he comes up with one or two a game, then he is warranting his place in the starting XI.
This is Futbol has gathered a selection of the supporters’ tweets:

Mahrez doesn’t fit this team. He’s a great footballer but his desire to do something special ruins our flow.

Mahrez experiment is seemingly a failure. Mans a ball hog.

Would love to know Pep’s thoughts on Mahrez. Looks all wrong for us to me, plays for himself.
