Alan Shearer has been blown away by Lucas Torreira and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during Arsenal’s rejuvenation under Unai Emery.

The Premier League record goalscorer told the BBC Sport website that central midfielder Torreira and striker Aubameyang have “at the top of their form” and central to the team’s huge improvement.

Arsenal head to Manchester United on Wednesday night and Shearer explained there is a chasm of difference between how the two sets of players are performing under their managers Emery and Jose Mourinho.

“In contrast to the way Arsenal are playing, United are nowhere near the level they could and should be at. Apart from maybe David de Gea in goal and Luke Shaw at left-back, you could not say any of their players are playing to their full potential,” Shearer told the BBC Sport website.

“Compare that to Arsenal’s players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Lucas Torreira who are full of confidence, are at the top of their form and are helping their side get results.”

OPINION

There’s little doubt that Torreira and Aubameyang have established themselves as firm favourites with the Gooner faithful for their performances since Emery took the reins and began his revolution of the squad that had underperformed for so long under Arsene Wenger. Little Uruguayan Torreira has the heart of a lion and the application of a soldier ant in the central acres, as well as providing class and composure, while Aubameyang is a speed machine up front with the ice-cold touch of an assassin. He has scored with each of his last 10 shots in the Premier League, a quite remarkable statistic and the United defence will be having sleepless nights worrying about the damage he could do if he is given even a modicum of space at Old Trafford. Both players are certain to start in what is such a major match as Emery looks to extend the team’s 19-match unbeaten run, which includes Sunday’s memorable derby day win against Tottenham.
