Mauricio Pochettino will be top of Manchester United’s target list to replace Jose Mourinho, according to Tottenham journalist Alastair Gold.

The Football London correspondent, who covers Spurs full-time, reported there will be “so much interest” in Pochettino from United after they dismissed Mourinho on Tuesday morning.

Gold explained Pochettino is “all about loyalty” and what he will be asking for from the Tottenham board and chairman Daniel Levy is “to feel valued” and “as wanted as possible”.

OPINION

Pochettino signed a five-year Tottenham contract in May but that will do nothing to prevent intense speculation that he will be top of United’s shortlist to replace Mourinho. The club are set to appoint a caretaker manager in the next 48 hours who will take over for the rest of the season. That suggests United are going to go all guns blazing to get the best possible man next summer. Could that be Pochettino? Yes, it could. The Argentine has totally transformed Spurs since taking over in 2014 and they are 13 points ahead of United in the Premier League table despite having a budget that is miniscule in comparison. He is a brilliant coach who knows how to get the best out of the modern footballer, something Mourinho has completely lost the ability to do. There is a real sense Tottenham need to buy some marquee players in the January window to stop Pochettino getting agitated. It’s Levy’s job to give him reasons to stay.
