OPINION

Newcastle United had to resign themselves to a point against Watford on Saturday, and there were plenty of talking points to take away from the game.

Rafa Benitez’ side showed a few great moments in the match, most notably Salomon Rondon’s superbly-taken header after a fantastic cross from teammate Matt Ritchie.

Abdoulaye Doucoure equalised for the hosts just eight minutes from time, though, a result which means that the Magpies stay in 15th place in the Premier League.

Here, This is Futbol has rounded up the three things learned about Newcastle’s draw v Watford:

Fernandez was star of the show

Federico Fernandez has arguably been one of Newcastle’s best centre-backs since he arrived from Swansea in the summer, and that was no different in the first half against Watford. He may not be one of the best passers of the ball, but he is certainly a player who has the ability to steady his teammates. The 29-year-old has brought both calmness and leadership to the table this season and he is tremendously solid in the defence. Overall, he was the star of the show.

Perez needs to be axed

If there is one player this season who has been incredibly underwhelming, it is Ayoze Perez. Fans have probably lost count of the number of chances he has been given this season by Benitez, which is simply not acceptable. This performance was the icing on the cake in terms of bad displays, and the chopping board surely beckons for the abysmal £45,000-a-week [Spotrac] liability sooner rather than later.

Diame had a decent showing

Mo Diame is a player who is known for blowing hot and cold numerous times this season, but it was clear to see that he was definitely blowing hot against Watford on Saturday. The midfielder was here, there and everywhere, battling for the ball in his attempt to boss the middle of the park. Yes, he is not the fans’ favourite player, but he certainly made a very positive contribution to this game. Overall, he was extremely important to Newcastle’s efforts.
