Newcastle are embroiled in yet more takeover talk after owner Mike Ashley surprised everyone by revealing live on Sky Sports news that he is in talks with two foreign buyers over a sale of the club.

However, the Daily Mail has claimed that he might have dropped a clanger by revealing the information, saying that at least one of the interested parties is not happy that the information has been made public.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer had his say after the Ashley interview went live and he poured even more cold water on the potential deal.

He said, “January transfer window approaching again is it!!??” and added a hashtag #groundhogday.

OPINION

Alan Shearer has said exactly what we were thinking when the interview broke last night. Around this time last year Newcastle fans were beyond excited at the prospect of a sale in time for the January transfer window. Amanda Staveley was the person behind the interested party last year but she’s nowhere to be seen this time around. It does seem like very odd timing and there have been lots of reports of Newcastle chasing number one January target Miguel Almiron and sending over a group over to the States to try to negotiate a deal. Would this really be happening if the club was on the brink of a sale? Newcastle fans will live in hope and there’s every possibility that it could actually be happening. The club will be sold at some point and there will be cynicism every time a possible buyer is mentioned. As for Ashley going on live TV and possibly scuppering the deal… We can’t really see there being much in that. Ashley might not be well liked at Newcastle but he’s not going to do anything that could scupper a £400million-odd deal. If someone wants to buy they will buy regardless of the information going public. Shearer will be as hopeful as any other fan and as cynical that a deal will actually go through until it’s signed, sealed and delivered.
