Many Newcastle United fans will be keen to not get overexcited about a potential takeover led by Peter Kenyon, with owner Mike Ashley having led them down a similar path before.

Just a year ago it looked as though Amanda Staveley was set to secure a takeover with the backing of PCP Capital Partners, but nothing ever materialised after weeks and weeks of talks.

Ashley is obviously still in charge, and despite his claims that a takeover is definitely on the cards as we head towards the January transfer window, fans will be cautious in getting their hopes up after last year’s debacle.

However, a fresh report has detailed Kenyon’s determination to get a deal done to take over at St. James’ Park, and it is an extremely positive one for fans.

According to the Chronicle, Kenyon will remain interested in buying Newcastle even if a deal is not done by the New Year – a situation which is looking increasingly likely.

More importantly, the former Premier League supremo would still be interested in a takeover if the January window passes by and the Magpies end up being relegated to the Championship.

This really illustrates just how determined Kenyon is to get a deal done, with the prospect of relegation having held up Staveley’s takeover attempt last year.

Obviously the value of the club will diminish hugely if that happened, meaning most potential buyers have been keen to include some sort of clause in the case it does occur.

This suggests that Kenyon is instead not put out by the prospect of the drop, and that should greatly improve the chances of a deal happening.

It is reported that a deal is still a way away with contact yet to be made with the Premier League, but this detail should be music to every Newcastle fan’s ears as we head towards the January window.
