Any talks over the sale of Newcastle United to a new owner will not be impacted by Mike Ashley’s decision to jet out to the United States on holiday, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Sports Direct Supremo has headed stateside on his annual holiday and that it was pre-arranged, even with discussions over a potential takeover taking place.

However, while some might have been worried about Ashley’s absence it is stated that any negotiations are firmly in the hands of his company St James’ Holdings which will be a boost to hopes of overcoming a standstill in talks right now.

The report goes on to say that a delay in progress falls at the door of the interested parties as opposed to Ashley.

Opinion

This is perhaps the best piece of news that Newcastle fans can expect right now when it comes to a takeover, knowing that things are still able to progress with or without Ashley in the country. Yes, things might have gone quiet and it seems as though there is nothing on the immediate horizon but the door seems very much open for someone to come in, agree a price and do a deal with Ashley. It might be a case of too little, too late for the January transfer window – which will hurt the Magpies at a time when they need investment in the playing squad – but a new owner can bring renewed optimism both on and off the pitch for the future of the club. Survival is the priority right now and perhaps a sale will be put off until the Toon Army are guaranteed to be watching their side in the Premier League next season. Still, it is positive to know that not everything relies on Ashley being on Tyneside.
