OPINION
There are some players who wear anonymity well. The likes of Michael Carrick or N’golo Kante can control a match through the cunning pulling of invisible strings. Mo Diame isn’t that sort of player – and fans hammered him for his performance against Wolves on Twitter. When the midfielder is at his rampant best he is unmissable, careering around the centre of the park with power and poise. On Sunday afternoon, however, he was far from at his best, and was barley noticeable as he ambled around the St, James’ Park turf. Everybody has an off day, and Diame has done fairly well during Newcastle’s recent upturn in form, but the Magpies need big performers week in, week out, and the concern is that Diame is not capable of maintaining any kind of quality over a prolonged period. With Jonjo Shelvey coming back to fitness, and with Ki Sung-yeung looking increasingly indispensable, the Senegalese international will have to sort his ideas out if he wants to keep his place in the Toon Army’s plans.

pleased Atsu is getting a start, he’s smart, crafty…
not so pleased the midfield is same.
watching Diamé play well defensively only to immediately give the ball up by holding on to it forever is not fun… at all— ? nufcmonkey.bsky.social (@NUFC_monkey) December 9, 2018
Diame's first touch is absolutely bot at times like. Although we seem to be stuck in this habit of firing in short passes unnecessarily hard at times. #NEWWOL
