It is never fair to blame one player alone for a disappointing result. In normal circumstances Newcastle’s 2-1 loss Wolves on Sunday evening might not even constitute an underwhelming outcome. The visitors came into the game off the back of a superb 2-1 win over Chelsea, and many Newcastle fans will have had very slim hopes of getting anything out of a fixture against the newly promoted side. To lose it at the death is always horrendous, sure, but in many ways the biggest disappointment will come from knowing that had they had 11 men on the pitch, the Magpies very probably could have held on for at least a draw. There will be much debate over whether or not Deandre Yedlin’s foul on Jota warranted a red card, but ultimately, the American should know better than to give Mike Dean a decision to make when he is the last man. In truth, it probably was not worthy of a dismissal, but a petulant tug in a moment of madness cost his side a point that could well be crucial come the end of the season.
