Newcastle United fans have expressed their concern after captain Jamaal Lascelles was pictured wearing a cast on his wrist, according to the Chronicle.

The 25-year-old was seen sporting the injury during a recent visit to a children’s hospital, sparking worry that he could be unavailable for Saturday’s Premier League clash with relegation rivals Fulham.

It is understood, however, that the injury is not a new one. The defender wore the cast during last weekend’s 1-0 win over Huddersfield as well, and it will not affect his availability for this Saturday.

A win for the Magpies could see them move seven points clear of the relegation zone after 18 matches.

OPINION

It will be a huge relief to Newcastle fans that Lascelles is available for Saturday’s clash. The Magpies have built up a good head of steam, and will know that this weekend’s fixture is more than winnable. If they can take all three points, and if other results go their way, a seven point gap between themselves and the drop zone would be a very welcome Christmas present. Lascelles could prove to be a central figure in any victory over the Cottagers, who boast ex-Magpie Aleksandar Mitrovic amongst their ranks. The Toon captain will know all too well just how much of a handful the 24-year-old can be, and he will be determined to keep his old teammate quiet. The striker has scored seven for the Londoners this season, and suppressing him could be a huge factor in seeing of a Fulham side who are threatening to find some kind of form under Claudio Ranieri.
