COMMENTARY
Everton fans have had plenty to celebrate this season and plenty of that joy has been thanks to the performances of senior mainstay Gylfi Sigurdsson. However he was not to everyone’s liking on Wednesday night, with many of the Goodison Park faithful taking to Twitter to slam the midfield maestro’s performance against Newcastle United. As the man who is meant to bring a creative spark to the side there was a distinct lack of opportunities up top for the likes of Cenk Tosun and it is clear where the supporters think the problem lay. Considering the Icelandic international cost well in excess of any of the Newcastle squad he should have been able to influence the game more and while the Toffees’ goal did come from his corner there was much more that should have been expected from the 29-year-old. As some of the supporters say, when Sigurdsson is not on form the whole Everton side struggle and that was clear as day against the Magpies. They need him to improve his performances as soon as possible – otherwise their struggles will continue.
This is Futbol has gathered a selection of the supporters’ tweets:
Digne cannot cross a ball and Sigurdsson doesn’t contribute enough – anonymous against reds and nufc. #efc

If we're serious about top 4 you can add sigurdsson to that list too, not gonna get far enough with a ten that can't consistently run with the ball at his feet https://t.co/cNTpOMAT39

Evident in the last 2 games if Sigurdsson doesnt fire.. we dont fire. We should have got 6 points out of the last 2 games. Still a believer in what we are doing tho #coyb

Sigurdsson disappointed me again tonight for the second game running. Showed bits of brilliance but too ‘in and out’ of the game. He’s our main man in the final third, he needs to be involved in the game more.

Not good enough from Everton tonight, Gomes looks the only creative spark, wide men way to narrow, Sigurdsson way off the pace tonight, Lookman blew a chance to impress, an that must be the worst Digne has ever played, shocking.

Don’t think he was that bad tbh, think Sigurdsson’s lack of creativity and defensive positioning was more to blame

Tbf it hasn’t been Sigurdsson’s best game tonight. Tosun hasn’t had any sort of service either…

Bloody awful that tonight, we put a 6'5" centre half up for all set pieces and we never beat the first man,Digne,Gueye,Tosun,Lookman,Seamus and Gylfi not good enough tonight..and why the hell does Bernard keep slipping over
