Manchester United are understood to be interested in bringing FC Porto’s Eder Militao to Old Trafford in a deal the that could be worth up to £45 million, according to the Times.

The 20-year-old has impressed hugely since moving to Europe from Sao Paulo in the summer, and has a release clause that Jose Mourinho is said to be considering activating.

There is no doubt that the Brazilian has serious talent, and whole load of potential besides, but these were exactly the sort of things said about Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof before they were drafted in on big money deals.

While it wouldn’t be fair to suggest that either of those players are poor, they have both certainly endured some rocky patches of form in a United backline that is constantly changing and severely lacks in confidence.

At this stage, the Reds don’t need another prospect, they need a defensive leader, and should be looking to bring in a well-established, big name defender as soon as they can.

If they need inspiration they should look no further than the immense job Virgil van Dijk has done for bitter rivals Liverpool.

Militao might be the right man in the future, but at the moment, he’d be just another overpriced letdown.

Mourinho must avoid another monumental transfer blunder.
