Jermaine Jenas believes that the allure of Manchester United will be too strong for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino to resist.

The Argentine has been heavily linked with the permanent job at Old Trafford since the sacking of Jose Mourinho earlier in the week.

The Spurs boss has not broken his silence on the situation, but former Tottenham midfielder Jenas believes that the size of United could tempt Pochettino to the north west.

Speaking on BT Sport Score, he said: “The word loyalty in football just doesn’t sit well with me anymore. I don’t know, obviously.

“The project he’s got going on at Tottenham and the way the players are developing is brilliant but at the same time its possibly the biggest football team in the world we’re talking about.

“From a players’ perspective you go and I don’t see how it’s any different from a managers’ perspective.

“He wants to win the league with Tottenham and that is part of his drive and ambition but when a club like Manchester United become available I don’t know many managers in the world that would turn that job down.

“There’s a level of acceptance to do with that.

“Tottenham as a team are probably as a team two years ahead of where Manchester United are as a team and that puts him back in terms of his plans to maybe want the league and so on and so forth.

“But still in the bigger picture what he can do as a legacy at Manchester United of course it is a good move.”

OPINION

It won’t be welcome news to Tottenham fans, but the fact of the matter is that Jenas is right in his appraisal of their club and Manchester United. Truthfully, Spurs are lightyears ahead of United with respect to challenging for a Premier League title, but the Reds are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and have the financial might to back it up. Tottenham should be praised for their prudence in recent times, but the reality of the situation id that if they are to begin challenging for a silverware on a regular basis they have to begin spending big, and Daniel Levy seems intent on sticking to his financial guns. Pochettino must realise that there is only so far he can take the Londoners without significant investment, and of he feels he has done all he can for Spurs then he may well call time on his stay in the capital and pursue a bigger challenge with a greater potential for glory elsewhere.
