Ander Herrera is set to sign a new contract at Man United in the “coming weeks”, according to the Times.

His representatives have been talking to Ed Woodward for the past few months and there is confidence that he is about to sign improved terms.

He had rejected an earlier offer that didn’t improve his £75k-a-week wages much but common ground has now been found.

The 29-year-old wants to stay at United.

Paul Scholes recently criticised Herrera for his display in the Premier League game against Southampton that ended in a 2-2 draw.

“You have to question the quality of the player,” Scholes said on BT Sport. “He’s in 15, 20 yards of space, it’s probably a 30 yard ball, a simple ball, if he’s not good enough to play that ball he shouldn’t be at this club.”

OPINION

Herrera isn’t the only Man United player who is getting criticised at the moment. From the manager Jose Mourinho, through the spine of the team, Man United’s first-team stars are underperforming and something needs to change. Herrera hasn’t been the worst player at United this season but we don’t think he’s ever really delivered on his £32million transfer fee. He’s only started four games and only scored one goal, although that was key in getting a point off Southampton. It’s three draws and a loss though in the last four league games and you have to think that a win – and a comfortable one at that – is the minimum that Mourinho will demand from his players this weekend. With Fulham’s shaky defence you also have to think that he will play an attacking team, although that’s not his style. If he doesn’t the murmurings of discontent at Old Trafford are going to get louder.
