Peter Crouch has claimed Daniel Levy will find himself without a manager unless he makes two landmark Liverpool-style signings at Tottenham.

The former Spurs striker warned the chairman Mauricio Pochettino will quit for Manchester United if the Londoners do not spend big on marquee players over the coming months.

Crouch is convinced Tottenham are on the verge of something special but they must step up their recruitment by landing players like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.

“Pochettino will not be able to keep Tottenham in the Champions League places if the club do not spend in the future and I’m certain he will be looking at Daniel Levy and trying to find out whether they have the financial capabilities to match their rivals,” Crouch told the Daily Mail.

“He will have looked at the business Liverpool have done over the past 12 months — smashing records to sign Virgil van Dijk and Alisson and improve the two weakest areas of their team — and want to do the same.

“If Levy doesn’t do this, he will find himself without a manager.”

OPINION

Maybe Crouch isn’t quite aware of the fine detail of Tottenham’s finances, but there is no chance of Levy having the funds to sanction signings of the value of Liverpool’s magnificent 2018 recruits Van Dijk and Alisson. That is fantasy land. Crouch is entitled to his opinion, and he speaks from the position of an experienced pro, but he needs to get real, too. Tottenham landed a big profit in their last set of annual accounts, but they are about to be hit with an eyewatering near-£1billion bill for their new stadium, which opens early next year. They would need to cash in on some senior stars at their peak to be able to land players of the quality of Van Dijk and Alisson, who cost Liverpool fees of £75million and £67million this year. Both of those deals have reaped dividends, with the duo integral to Jurgen Klopp’s side reaching the Premier League summit at Christmas. But Spurs won’t be able to match that, or anywhere near.
