Carlos Queiroz is in the frame for the caretaker job at Man United, according to Independent journalist Miguel Delaney.

Queiroz is currently the Iran national coach and has managed Portugal and Real Madrid.

More importantly, he’s had two stints as assistant manager at Man United.

Delaney made the claim on Tuesday morning after Jose Mourinho was sacked by United after a terrible start to the season.

OPINION

Queiroz would make a lot of sense. he’s got buckets of experience at the highest level and knows Old Trafford inside out after two stints there. The caretaker job is actually quite attractive as well – expectations will be fairly low and the chance to improve the current team relatively easy. However, he has just extended his contract with Iran for the 2019 Asian Cup and he might think this has come at the wrong time. On the other hand, he might see it as the perfect opportunity to stake a claim for a dream job. He’s certainly someone the United fans would love to see in charge for the rest of the season. The sacking of Mourinho has to be a positive step for United. His tenure had become a nightmare, a seemingly never-ending run of terrible performances, issues with players and the sort of football that Man United fans would have hated. They need to make the next permanent choice carefully though. They’ve never managed to replace Fergie but this is the opportunity to get a progressive, aggressive, attacking coach more in tune with the modern game. Tottenham fans might be looking over their shoulders all season.
