Manchester City may have secured yet another Premier League win that lifts them five points clear of Liverpool in the Premier League table, but for once they had to endure a nervous finish as Watford held them to a 2-1 triumph at Vicarage Road. Pep Guardiola’s side had appeared set to stroll to victory after going 2-0 up early in the second half as Riyad Mahrez added to Leroy Sane’s opening-period strike, but Abdoulaye Doucoure scrambled in for Watford in the 85th minute to give the hosts hope of an unlikely comeback. Many City fans were furious at the contribution of Fabian Delph, who had given the ball away in the build-up to the goal. The England international is a midfielder by trade but is being used as an emergency left-back in the absence through injury of first choice Benjamin Mendy. Supporters claim his lack of defensive nous is a major issue – it certainly comes to the fore when Guardiola’s team are under pressure – and some were brutal in their condemnation following his performance on Tuesday night.
