OPINION

Oleksandr Zinchenko banged in comfortably Manchester City’s best penalty on Tuesday night in what was a pretty dreadful shoot-out as they qualified for the League Cup semi-finals after a 1-1 draw against Leicester at the King Power Stadium. But that did not prevent derision being heaped upon the Ukraine international for his latest iffy display at left-back. Zinchenko struggled to deal with the defensive part of his remit, and looked a rabbit trapped in the headlights ever time the Leicester players ran at him. There has to be some sympathy, however, for the 22-times Ukraine international. He prefers to be in midfield, and is far more comfortable there. The injury to Benjamin Mendy means Pep Guardiola is rotating Zinchenko and Fabian Delph on the left side of defence. Neither has really convinced, and both are better going forward than heading back to their own goals. One City fan labelled Zinchenko as “Pep’s blind spot” and plenty of other fans were very critical.
