OPINION

Phil Jones’ sixth Manchester United appearance of the season could not really have gone any worse. The team lost 2-1 at Valencia, he scored a calamitous own goal and was also at fault for the other one conceded by the visitors when Carlos Soler pounced on his headed clearance to strike home a fizzing low finish amid slack marking. Now 26 and in his eighth season at the club he joined as a teenager for a fee of nearly £20million that looked pricey at the time and now looks ludicrous, it is safe to say Jones will never live up to the huge expectation foisted upon him soon after his arrival, when Sir Alex Ferguson hailed him as a potential great. Maybe Fergie had been on the red wine when he made that comment. Jones looked punch-drunk in Spain last night as he showed in a centre-back partnership with Eric Bailly why he is very much a second-string player these days. It’s fair to say a broad section of United fans were fuming at his performance.
