Dejan Lovren has divided opinion among Liverpool fans for much of the time since joining from Southampton in the summer of 2014. But 2018 has been certainly his best year yet in a red jersey and there have been many positive responses from supporters after Liverpool Echo journalisted reported the Croatian is back in training at the club’s Melwood headquarters and in contention to return against Napoli on Tuesday night. It has been a stop-start season for Lovren after he played a key role in his country reaching the World Cup final, including in their semi-final win over England. He began the campaign with a pelvic injury and various other ailments, including a recent concussion, mean he has made only six appearances. The injury to Joe Gomez, who has emerged as Virgil van Dijk’s preferred partner at centre-back this season, has re-opened the door for Lovren and Joel Matip. Jurgen Klopp must decide which of the pair start tonight, with Matip the man in possession after impressing in the wins over Bournemouth and Burnley. Others are convinced that Lovren would be a better option.
