There weren’t just 11 heroes in red on a European night that will take its place in the Liverpool annals. There were 14, including substitute Fabinho, who replaced James Milner when he limped off with cramp after 85 minutes. The midfield enforcer made a vital contribution during his nine minutes, including stoppage time, on the pitch in a nervy finish at Anfield. With Napoli abandoning their methodical build-up play in favour of an aerial assault that included throwing centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly up front, Fabinho won a number of vital late headers in his team’s half of the pitch to prevent a bombardment of Alisson’s goal. The summer signing from Monaco was unfortunate to lose his starting place against Napoli after an outstanding performance in the 4-0 weekend hammering of Bournemouth. But many supporters noticed his aerial prowess late on, and were grateful to the Brazil international for helping cement the 1-0 scoreline.
