Chelsea star Gary Cahill will train away from the first-team squad as he prepares for a January exit from Stamford Bridge, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper report that the veteran defender has hired a personal trainer to help him stay fit and sharp, and to guarantee that he hits the ground running at his new club with an exit now nailed-on.

The Telegraph claim that Cahill wants to leave the club on loan ahead of a permanent exit in the summer, with Fulham, West Ham, and Arsenal all monitoring the situation.

Cahill has won seven major honours during his time at Chelsea including two Premier League titles and a Champions League win.

OPINION

It has looked nailed-on for a few weeks now that Cahill will leave Chelsea in the January window. The experienced defender has not played for the Blues since November and is firmly out of Maurizio Sarri’s thinking for the future. His decision to hire a personal trainer is illustrative of his commitment to remain fit and sharp, and will no doubt help him when it comes to making an impact at his new club. It does seem a bit harsh that he is training away from the first-team in the meantime, but that is obviously a decision which both parties are happy with. Cahill has clearly accepted he has no future at the Bridge, and is now working on earning a move to another big club. The centre-back is not short of admirers at the top level, with Fulham looking the most likely to snap him up. That is a move which may ruffle a few feathers in west London, but Cahill deserves recognition for his success at Chelsea and should be allowed to join whoever he wants in January.
