Dimitar Berbatov has claimed that Tottenham need to start winning trophies to stop manager Mauricio Pochettino from moving elsewhere.

The Argentine has been in charge of the north London club since 2014 but has yet to lift any silverware during his tenure.

Rumours have linked him with the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United in recent times, and former Spurs man Berbatov believes that the club must break its trophy duck to avoid his departure.

Speaking on Goals on Sunday (Sky Sports Premier League, 11am, Sunday December 9th), the Bulgarian said: “They have everything the manager would want. A great squad, great training pitch, great stadium. Maybe they are missing only silverware.

“It goes for the manager as it does for the players – they want to win something and have something to show afterwards.

“Spurs need to win something in order for him to stay – it is the only thing missing. I hope he stays, everyone I speak to has only good things to say about him.

“For Spurs to reach the heights they want to reach they need to keep Pochettino.”

OPINION

Tottenham fans would be devastated if Mauricio Pochettino were to leave. Over the past four years he has built a side of genuine title contenders that play a distinctive, attractive style of football. He is young and ambitious, and any club would be lucky to have him – and therein lies the issue. Spurs are on the cusp of being a great team, but they have to start making good on their promises of success to avoid becoming perpetual also-rans. Until they do that, Pochettino will continually be linked with the top jobs at some of Europe’s best clubs whenever they become available. The question is, would a domestic cup, or even a Europa League, be enough to prevent him from leaving? The harsh reality is, probably not, and for all their drastic improvement under the 46-year-old, they still look a long way off a league title, and even further from a Champions League. Part of the issue is that they cannot invest on the same level as the supergiants they face off with, largely because of Daniel Levy’s commitment to financial prudence. There’s nothing wrong with this, it has to be said, but until he cuts loose the pursestrings, it’s difficult to see Spurs making that final step to genuine elite quality. Until they do, losing Pochettino will be a recurring threat.
