Newcastle United’s woes continued when the lost 2-1 to Wolves on Sunday and it is glaringly obvious what the issue is.

Previous funds that have been given to Rafa Benitez in recent transfer windows have not allowed him to bring in the top-level talent that can allow his team to compete with their Premier League rivals.

While Benitez has the knowledge to make the most of what he has got, it will only get him so far, so a move for a highly-rated attacking midfielder is of the most paramount importance – especially as he has had to resort to playing Ayoze Perez recently.

That is why is makes complete sense to move for one of Brighton’s star assets, Pascal Gross.

Liga Financial report that Liverpool are interested in signing the £30,000-a-week [Spotrac] dazzler in January, but it is Newcastle who must get themselves into pole position.

They need to twist their rivals’ arm in order to secure his capture, as the Seagulls are not likely to let him leave the Amex without putting up a fight.

The 27-year-old has the ability to propel the team to the next level with his excellent ability in the final third as well as his efficient crossing skills – and Benitez would no doubt find himself in dreamland by completing such a masterstroke.

Brighton felt his loss on the pitch heavily when he was injured earlier in the season as he is one of those players who can make things happen out of thin air.

Gross is more than capable of slotting straight into the first team if he arrives at St James’ Park in the New Year – and the fans will certainly be drooling at the prospect.

Things need to start happening at Newcastle and that begins with making a statement signing such as this one.
