Arsenal are in a three way chase for Real Valladolid defender Fernando Calero as they “set up their tent” for a January bargain, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim on their transfer centre [10/12; 11:12] that Unai Emery’s side are joined by German giants Borussia Dortmund and in-form Spanish outfit Sevilla in tracking the 23-year-old.

Calero is said to have a release clause in his contract that means he could leave Sergio’s side for as little as £10million come the January transfer window.

The young Spaniard has starred for Valladolid this season, playing in every minute of his team’s 15 La Liga games this campaign.

Good move for Arsenal?

Calero is highly regarded in Spain and has clearly been operating at a very high level this term. The Gunners have recently discovered a need for another centre back after Rob Holding went down with a long term injury. In that regard Calero could turn out to be a strong signing for Unai Emery’s side. Holding aside there isn’t much youthful exuberance in the heart of the Arsenal defence so Calero would be a useful signing moving forward. He has been a regular contributor for Valladolid for a while now and has taken a big step forward this season. For £10million it sounds like a risk worth taking for a young man who could shore up this Gunners backline.

Likely to happen?

Well, Arsenal would obviously have to beat off interest from Dortmund and Sevilla for the defender, two teams who would also be a good next step for Calero. However, with the release clause present there would appear to be very little stopping the Gunners from bringing him in come January.
