Newcastle United attacker Ayoze Perez was left in a fit of rage in the St James’ Park tunnel with the officiating in Sunday’s defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The broadcast journalist claims on his personal Twitter account that the Spanish maestro, who netted an equaliser for the Magpies after they fell behind, was “raging” in the tunnel at full time, insisting that he was fouled by Willy Boly in the penalty box, appearing to be caught by a swinging elbow from the Wolves defender.

Having seen DeAndre Yedlin sent off midway through the second half, the home side succumbed to a last minute winner from the visitors.

Opinion

No wonder Perez is blowing his top in the tunnel. He was absolutely robbed of a penalty. Boly might not intend to hit the Newcastle man in the face but when you lift your arms and swing your elbows back you are playing dangerously and the referee has had a shocker in missing it. Not only that, but having gone down with a head injury the officials failed to stop play, despite rules and regulations to protect players over the severity of head injuries. This was really poor from the referee and his assistants and had there been serious damage, which a potential elbow to the face like that can cause, then they would have been slaughtered for not allowing him to receive immediate attention. Forget the penalty claims – this was a health and safety matter and the referee failed to carry out his duty to an acceptable level. Serious questions need to be asked about why play was allowed to continue. As for Perez, he no doubt has some stern words he would like to send the referee’s way.
