OPINION
Mohamed Diame didn’t do much wrong in Newcastle United’s 3-0 defeat against West Ham on Saturday – but that did not stop some of the club’s fans from ripping into the midfield for his performance. Diame has been called a “liability” and a “donkey”, but that is very unfair on the Senegal international who was hardly at fault for the way the game turned out at St James’ Park. Newcastle don’t really have anyone else who can do Diame’s job. Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sung-yueng are similar central midfielders and Diame is the only real defensive-minded midfielder who can sit back, win the ball and move up the pitch when needed. He can’t be an easy player to play against. Defensive midfielders are always under-appreciated by fans and Diame is just Newcastle’s scapegoat at times. The ex-Hull player has improved a lot in 2018, Newcastle fans need to be thankful that they don’t have 2017 Diame playing every week.

Diame is a bloody liability!
How many times has he given the ball away, why not play Shelvey instead with Ki to give us more pace & width.
Sorry but Diame is simply not good enough!#NEWWHU— Laura ?? (@lspark_89) December 1, 2018
