Ally McCoist has blasted Lassana Coulibaly for his performance in Rangers’ 1-0 defeat to Rapid Vienna in the Austrian capital on Thursday night.

Coulibaly, 22, has been widely criticised for his form in recent weeks and the on-loan midfielder had yet another poor outing in the final Europa League group stage game this week.

Former Gers manager McCoist was not happy with the Mali international while commentating on the game, claiming that the midfielder has looked like a completely different player since returning from an injury earlier this season.

“Rangers need to see more from him, Coulibaly,” said McCoist during BT Sport 3’s live match coverage (07:08pm).

“I don’t think he’s been the same player since he come back from his injury.

“I don’t know whether he’s still getting a little niggle or whatever it is, but he doesn’t look the player he was to me before his injury.

“They need more from him.”

OPINION

McCoist was spot on about Coulibaly during BT Sport’s commentary on Thursday night. The on-loan Amiens midfielder has had shocker after shocker for Rangers ever since his injury earlier in the season. Before he was ruled out for a few weeks he was in brilliant form and played a role in helping the Light Blues qualify for the group stages of the Europa League. But while he was injured he must have lost all his confidence or was swapped with a worse player because the drop in his form has been alarming. With January closing in, Steven Gerrard might have to have a good think about Coulibaly’s future at Ibrox. At the moment it looks like he won’t have his loan deal made permanent next summer unless he picks up his form in the second half of the campaign, but that’s even if Gerrard wants to keep him after January. There have been rumours and reports about Ovie Ejaria and Umar Sadiq having their loans cancelled early. Coulibaly’s place at the club is not guaranteed.
