Leeds must try and land Mason Holgate

Leeds fans might be resigned to a quiet January after manager Marcelo Bielsa said he didn’t anticipate signing anyone, but we think there might be a couple of surprises in store.

And we’re really hoping that one of them is Everton’s young and talented centre-back Mason Holgate.

The 22-year-old started the season in the first-team, playing the first five league games before dropping to the bench and then out of the squad altogether.

He might not be good enough for Everton at the moment but there’s a trio of quality centre-backs ahead of him in the pecking order: Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Kurt Zouma.

Now, Sky Sports have reported that he is free to leave the club on a loan in January after signing a new five-year deal last year.

He would be perfect for Leeds who have struggled in the centre-back position this year, with injuries to Gaetano Berardi and Liam Cooper.

Bielsa has had to tinker with his side, drafting in Aapo Halme, before dropping him for Kalvin Phillips.

But, neither option is ideal and while that’s happening Leeds are one injury away from a crisis.

With Holgate is available on loan, Victor Orta should make sure he’s top of the pile and bring the £25k/wk Premier League man to Elland Road.

He would add to the Leeds squad immeasurably and he would develop as a player under Bielsa. It’s what we’d call a win/win.
