Don Goodman was in awe of West Brom ace Matt Phillips for his performance in the XX Brentford at The Hawthorns on Monday night.

Phillips, 27, was in stunning form for the Baggies and almost scored a goal of the season contender when his long-range strike crashed the crossbar in the first-half.

Former West Brom and Wolves striker Goodman was blown away by the Scotland international’s display against the Bees, adding that he was the man of the match.

“He has been the best player on the pitch,” he said during Sky Sports Main Event’s live coverage on Monday night. “He has been outstanding.

“He’s playing at the absolute height of his confidence.”

OPINION

Phillips has been sensational for West Brom this season. The former QPR winger has scored five goals and assisted five in 17 appearances across all competitions and it is becoming pretty clear that he is someone who is playing below his level in the Championship. Yes, Phillips was woeful last term when the Baggies were relegated but who wasn’t? In his debut season at The Hawthorns the Scottish winger was in great form and it is good to see him rediscover that under Darren Moore’s leadership. You will probably see Jay Rodriguez and Craig Dawson linked with moves away from the Black Country again in January, but don’t be surprised if Phillips also attracts attention from the Premier League. He is fast, direct, skillful, good at set-pieces and can score goals. There will be some struggling sides desperate for that kind of player next month. Albion cannot afford to let him go though.
