Everton were dealt a worrying blow on Thursday as it was claimed that their on loan midfielder Andre Gomes is a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Telegraph reported that Mauricio Pochettino’s side could rival the Toffees for the 25-year-old once his season long loan at Goodison Park comes to an end in the summer.

Marco Silva and co. must do everything in their power to ensure that the Portuguese international doesn’t slip through their grasp.

Gomes has starred for Everton so far this season, producing quality performance after quality performance in the heart of the Toffees’ midfield. He has given Silva’s team an added dimension and a touch of class in the middle of the park, and they cannot give that up.

Obviously it will ultimately be up to the player, but the Merseyside giants should use now until the end of the season as an opportunity to convince Gomes that Goodison Park is where he belongs.

They were the ones who took a chance on him in the summer and gave him the opportunity to play regular football following his disastrous period at Barcelona. That should count for something, shouldn’t it?

However, there isn’t much room for sentiment in football, and so Everton should push on with a positive transfer window in January and a strong second half of the season to demonstrate their ambition to the former Valencia man.

It’s been clear this campaign that Everton are making progress on the pitch, but that will all be for nought if they let a player of Gomes’s calibre leave them come the end of the season.

His quality is not easily replaceable, and his performances in central midfield have put the likes of Tom Davies and Morgan Schneiderlin in the shade.

Ultimately, Everton must do everything they can to ensure that Gomes doesn’t fly the nest once his loan is up. They need to bring him in on a permanent deal, Tottenham be damned.
