Chelsea have joined the hunt for Leeds wonderkid Jack Clarke in January, according to the Mirror.

In their live transfer blog (7.03am) they claim that with Man City already interested, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri wants to beat Pep Guardiola to the 18-year-old’s signature.

The report claims that Chelsea will make a ‘firm bid’ for the player in January who has broken through into the first-team this season.

Clarke has made five appearances in the Championship this season and is starting to make the headlines with match-winning displays like the one against Sheffield United on Saturday.

OPINION

This isn’t a surprise. Jack Clarke is the man of the moment at Leeds and despite not starting a game, he’s making the headlines with some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs. Man City were the first big name to break cover and they had been linked with him before. It’s been widely reported that they tried to sign him before he penned his first pro contract with Leeds but Clarke stayed at Elland Road. His current contract keeps him there until 2021. Chelsea’s interest is new and the Mirror claims they are going to make a firm bid in January. It would have to be big and if Clarke is getting good advice he won’t go anywhere near Stamford Bridge. The club has a terrible record with young players, with Callum Hudson-Odoi the latest wonderkid to find his way to the first-team frozen. It’s hard to know if there’s anything in these stories or not. Reliable Leeds sources are staying tight-lipped although Phil Hay did confirm the prior Man City interest. Irrespective, he’s in the spotlight now and the best thing Leeds can do is get him signed up on a longer and more lucrative contract. They should move to protect their interest in Clarke before the January window opens.
