Leeds United are unlikely to sign Kieren Westwood from Sheffield Wednesday in the January window, according to Phil Hay.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported on his personal Twitter account that his Leeds contacts are pouring cold water on the possibility of the goalkeeper, 34, moving to Elland Road next month.

This comes after the Mirror reported in their paper edition on Tuesday (page 53) that the Wednesday veteran is set to join Leeds on a free transfer in the forthcoming window.

OPINION

It’s that time of the year when transfer rumours abound, and some of them prove to be better sourced than others. Only time will tell whether Leeds will indeed push through the signing of Westwood by the 31 January deadline, as the Mirror strongly suggest today they will. There is plenty of smoke and mirrors around transfers, and an agreement could be in place between the shot-stopper and the west Yorkshire outfit, but a deal might not be able to go through for various reasons for many weeks. Note the wording used by the reliable Hay. He is not emphatically ruling out the possibility of Westwood joining Leeds, albeit the steer he has been given by his excellent contacts at the club is that a deal is not close. Leeds fans searching for answers on this one are going to have to be patient. It is still only 11 December, and the window does not open for another three weeks. Plenty can happen in that time.
