In what seems like a regular occurrence for West Bromwich Albion nowadays, centre-back Craig Dawson produced a masterful performance in his team’s 4-0 win over Rotherham on Saturday.

The 6ft 2in Englishman [Source: Transfermarkt] was in control of proceedings from the get-go at the New York Stadium, marking his 200th appearance for the Baggies with a dogged display.

The Express & Star reported earlier this year that Premier League side Burnley were interested in signing the 28-year-old, and Saturday’s showing made clear just how important it is for Darren Moore to resist any further attempts to poach the defender come January.

It would be disastrous for the Baggies’ promotion push were Dawson to depart mid season. He is by far the team’s finest centre-back and it would take a monumental effort for the club to replace him adequately.

Dawson has formed a solid partnership with Ahmed Hegazi at the heart of West Brom’s defence this campaign, and the effectiveness of their union was on full display against the Millers.

The two players won everything in the air, stymieing any attempt at offence from the hosts and ensuring that hat trick hero Dwight Gayle was safe to go about his business up top knowing that the Baggies goal was well taken care of.

It’s become clear this term that Kyle Bartley is a severe step down from Dawson, while Tosin Adarabioyo is only at the club on loan and remains inexperienced at this level.

West Brom need to strengthen in January, not weaken themselves by selling one of their best players. There’s no doubt that Dawson is Premier League quality, but if a top flight side comes in for him once again in January the Baggies need to tell them where to go.

Moore’s team are flourishing at the top end of the pitch, but only because there is such assurance provided by the likes of Dawson at the back. It’s imperative that West Brom don’t lose him next month.
