Aston Villa are expected to make a January bid for Brentford attacker Romaine Sawyers, according to West London Sport

The regional outlet report that former Bees boss Dean Smith is likely to launch a raid to sign Sawyers, who played under him at both Walsall and Brentford.

West London Sport claim that West Bromwich Albion are also in the hunt for the 27-year-old playmaker, who has 18 months remaining on his current deal at Griffin Park.

Good move for Aston Villa?

Sawyers is a talented player, but Villa should be aiming higher.

Smith already has a brilliant attack at his disposal, and needs to be signing players of serious quality in order to improve what he already has.

There would be questions over whether Sawyers would represent an upgrade on their current attackers, and also over his ability to compete in the Premier League should they win promotion.

Obviously Smith knows the player well and believes in his ability, so Sawyers could surprise people at Villa Park if this does happen, but it is not the most inspiring move.

Likely to happen?

It looks like a Villa bid for Sawyers is now expected to materialise in the January window.

Their interest has been previously reported, but it seems as though they are now ready to formalise that hunt with a concrete offer in the upcoming market.

Whether that bid is successful is another matter, with Brentford sure to want to keep hold of their attacking star.
